Washington Nationals
From Wiklifield
The Washington Nationals franchise began play as the Montreal Expos in 1969 as an expansion team. In 2002, then owner Jeffrey Loria purchased the Florida Marlins and the other 29 MLB owners took over the Montreal Expos. During the next two years, the Expos were run on a minimal budget and played 20 some home games a year in Puerto Rico. Still under MLB stewardship, the franchise moved to Washington D.C. in 2005 and became the Nationals and was finally purchased by the Lerner Group in 2006.
The Cubs clinched the 1989 National League East in Montreal when Mitch Williams struck out Mike Fitzgerald.
