The Tampa Bay Rays were an expansion team that began play in the American League in 1998. They were originally known as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before changing it prior to the 2008 season, which coincidentally was their first and only playoff and World Series appearance. They were the team the Cubs were playing during the infamous Sammy Sosa corked bat incident in 2004. Their only other meeting was a three game sweep by the Rays in Tampa in 2008.
