The Baltimore Orioles franchise began in 1901 as the Milwaukee Brewers, moved to St. Louis the following year and played as the Browns until 1953 before finally settling in Baltimore. They have faced the Cubs twice in interleague play in 2003 and 2008. Since Andy MacPhail took over as GM and brought in former Cub scouting director John Stockstill, they have made a habit of bringing in old Cubs players, especially those drafted when the two were members of the Cubs organization.

[edit] Rumored Deals Involving Chicago Cubs

2005-2006 offseason: Heavy rumors of the Cubs trying to acquire Miguel Tejada, most likely in exchange for Mark Prior. At one point it was rumored to be Mark Prior and Rich Hill for Tejada, with the Cubs asking for Eric Bedard in return.

Before the 2008 season, the Cubs were heavily rumored to try and acquire 2b Brian Roberts from the Orioles. Reportedly close many times and even a few reports of the deal being done, the two sides never did complete the deal. Just about every Cubs prospects was mentioned at some point, most notably Felix Pie, Sean Marshall, Ronny Cedeno, Jose Ceda and Donald Veal. Felix Pie was rumored to be the stumbling block on most trade offers, the Orioles insisting on acquiring him and the Cubs refusing to part with him. By the 2009 season, Pie ended up an Oriole after a disappointing 2008 season for considerably less talent than Brian Roberts.

The rumors spilled into the following offseason (preceding the 2009 season) although not nearly at the same feverish pace. At one point the Orioles and Roberts could have been the third team in a possible trade involving Jake Peavy to the Cubs.[1]
