The Kansas City Royals began play as an expansion team in 1969. They've faced the Cubs five times in interleague play from 1997 to 2001.

June 1: Traded SS Travis Dawkins for INF/OF Damian Jackson.

December 15: Traded with San Diego Padres to acquire RHP Jason Szuminski from Chicago Cubs in Rule 5 draft. Padres received Rich Thompson in the deal. Szuminski was later returned to the Cubs.

December 8: A 3 team trade involving the New York Mets. Chicago Cubs received OF Jim Dwyer from New York Mets. Kansas City Royals received 1B/OF Pete LaCock from Chicago Cubs. New York Mets received a player to be named later from the Kansas City Royals. On December 13th, 1976 the Royals sent OF Sheldon Mallory to the Mets to complete the deal.
