The Iowa Cubs have been the Chicago Cubs Triple A affiliate since 1981, first known as the Iowa Oaks in 1981 and then changed to Iowa Cubs in 1982. They began play in the America Association and when that folded, switched to the Pacific Coast League in 1998. The Iowa Cubs have made the postseaon eight times with one minor league championship in 1993.

The franchise itself began in 1969 as an affiliate of the Oakland Athletics, and that lasted until 1973. The Chicago White Sox took over for two seasons, then the Houston Astros in 1975, and back to the Chicago White Sox from 1976-1980.

Home games are played at Principal Park (formerly Sec Taylor Stadium) which underwent a major renovation in 1990. The player development contract with the Chicago Cubs runs through 2012. The franchise is owned by Raccoon Baseball, Inc.
