The Boston Red Sox are one of the original American League teams that began in 1901 as the Boston Americans. They became the Boston Red Sox in 1908. They've played the Cubs only once during the regular season in 2005 and defeated them in their only postseason match-up in 1918, four games to two.

2004

July 31st: Traded SS Nomar Garciaparra and OF Matt Murton to the Cubs in a four-team deal involving the Minnesota Twins and Montreal Expos. The Red Sox received 1B Doug Mientkiewicz from the Twins and SS Orlando Cabrera from the Expos. The Cubs sent RHP Francis Beltran, SS Alex Gonzalez and INF Brendan Harris to the Expos and LHP Justin Jones to the Twins.
July 21st: Received SS Ricky Gutierrez from the Cubs for either a player to be named later or cash. No other player was ever mentioned to complete the trade, so it's assumed the Red Sox just sent cash to the Cubs.
